it been a long time i wanted to do this, but first, i couldn't make a proper atmosphear and so on and so forth, the last reason was Max9 doesn't start in Vista.
yesterday, i saw 3DS MAX 2008 and it works on Vista! so i'll be working on this now!
the main problem i have is unable to get a good texture, and i'm talking about over 10000pixels in width or don't even think about looking closer than this. and, i don't have three days to render this baby like the other guy does, it has to finish in like fifteen hours, that's a problem as well.
this is not the final thing or even close to it, i thought i had a cool lense flare plug-in for my after effects, but i was wrong.... this flare obviously don't look cool enugh.
Features:
FREE unless someone forces me to charge money
city lights in the dark side
the sun, possibly the moon
looks good....

Looking good so far. Keep us posted on your progress!

good news! i found my Ultra-cool After effects plug-in, now i just have to solve all these little confusing things in 3DS MAX like texture filtering and Anti-allising.
and, can you guys tell me if you would like to have a moon going around?
and would you like to have the sun rotating(with respect to the camera that is...)?

I'd love to see it in action

I would think to just have Earth do it's rotation...no wait...what about doing a Solar Eclipse. Would that be possible?

what is a solar eclips.....

This is looking good! Remember, adding a moving moon or sun causes some issues with objects moving too fast on the desktop because you want to keep the video length short. If you stretch out the video to several minutes in length, then the video file gets too big and you have to lower the resolution or lower video quality. It's a delicate mix of size-time-quality.

i don't have three days to render this baby like the other guy does, it has to finish in like fifteen hours, that's a problem as well.

I assume you have only 15 hours because thats the longest stretch of time you have available? If you render out to .png files it will make each frame a separate file. That way you can continue where you left off if you need to interrupt the render for some reason. Then import the first .png into After Effects and check the sequence option and it will show up in After Effects just like a video.

Max9 doesn't start in Vista

Max 9 is working on Vista for me.

The Moon passes in front of the Sun, blocking it creating a Solar Eclipse.

oh, i know what is an eclips, but i was guessing something like eclips caused by the earth and there is a cool lense flare on the edge, that kind of effect...
i wonder where would you place the earth in a solar eclips dream?

thanks to TheMasterBaron
but i still have to render this in 15 or twenty hours maximum, and it is enugh for my skill level at 3DS MAX.
I am currently using 20seconds of render time every frame, for a 1 minute loop at 20FPS, that gives me 1200frames and takes six hours to complet, even if i double the render time i will still have enugh time to render it.
saving them as images, i would later on have troubles putting them together into a video... but, the benifit is, it would be smaller than a looseless video.

That's called an 'event horizon' ...

FINAL WORDS BEFORE OVERNIGHT RENDER.
Let god protect my computer from making an erro during this render process...
i think i will still use PNG images because it is very possible there will be an erro. using images just to make sure if there is an erro i can continue where i left off.
estimated one hour render from After effects needed.

Heh, that lens flare makes me want to sneeze for some reason.
Oh, here's the reason: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_sneeze_reflex

I always wondered why I sneezed with bright flashes of light..... thanks for that bit of info!

I have read that there is an issue with Max 9 and Vista. I think there is a patch available but you would have to do a search for it - memory fails me where I saw it.

I am eager to see this finished too - and I too fall into the 17% - 35% of the population that sneezes at bright lights.

800 frames finished out of 1200 frames by now...
several erros occured furing the last twenty hours or so...

Looking good man

where did you find the good texture, those with 10000pixels in width?

keep up the good work
